Introduction by the Magistrate of Pingtung County
2020 Luoshanfeng Arts Festival
An invitation to dance with the wind
I am a native of Checheng, where I was both born and raised. The locals have mixed feelings about “luoshanfeng,” or downslope wind that comes by every autumn and winter. While it makes the onions ripe and sweet, the fact that it is almost as strong as typhoon drives the tourists away. By infusing art with “wind” through the ideas and creativity of the artists and residents, we have turned crisis into opportunity with the arts festival since 2018. This allows wind to be seen as well as experienced, introducing the land we grew up on to more people.
After the first edition of the arts festival took place in 2018, we spent two years doing fieldwork, hosting multiple lectures and workshops, as well as turning the waiting room and fish market into the Sea-viewing Museum and Daifeng Building, respectively. The park is designed as the place to experience Luoshanfeng while enjoying the view of the ocean. It is our fondest hope that the unique blessings of the mountains and ocean in Pingtung can attract travelers during the season of Luoshanfeng.
I have said that “Luoshanfeng is like a migratory bird. It comes and goes without ever learning how to wait. It has left marks on this land after tens of thousands of years, but it never stayed. Now we can converse with the wind through art and make it stay.” We invite you to enjoy the arts festival and wind at Haikou Harbor in Checheng Township from December 18 on this year. Let’s dance with the wind!
